How to convert M4A to MP3 on iPhone or a computer

This M4A to MP3 converter makes a recording usable in apps or players that do not accept M4A. On iPhone, open Voice Memos, choose your recording, then use Share and Save to Files. On a computer or another phone, export the M4A from its recording app and select the saved file here.

M4A input
The included AAC-encoded M4A sample is supported. M4A can contain other encodings, including ALAC; an extension alone does not prove compatibility.
MP3 settings
Start at 96 or 128 kbps for speech, or 192 kbps for music. Higher settings create larger files and do not improve the source.
On iPhone
Touch devices have a 25 MB file limit. After conversion, save the MP3 in Files or use your browser’s sharing menu.

This short, synthetic recording says: “The meeting starts at nine. Please bring your notes.” The result below was made with this tool. Compare the sound and size, or try the sample above with your own settings.

Original M4A

50.8 KB · 4.42 s · 44.1 kHz · mono · AAC in M4A

Converted MP3

105.3 KB · 4.47 s · 44.1 kHz · mono · 192 kbps MP3

Download converted sample

This M4A is already compressed, so the default MP3 is larger. Conversion helps an app accept the file; it does not guarantee savings or improve the source. These sizes describe this sample only. Duration, source audio, format, and settings change your result; a smaller file is not a measure of better sound.

A LITTLE CLARITY

M4A to MP3 questions

How do I convert an iPhone voice memo to MP3?

In Voice Memos, select the recording and choose Share, then Save to Files. Open this M4A to MP3 converter and select the saved recording. Convert, download, and find the MP3 in Files or your browser’s download list.

Does M4A to MP3 improve quality or always reduce size?

No. It mainly changes compatibility. MP3 uses lossy compression, and the output may be larger or smaller depending on the source and bitrate. An AAC M4A is already compressed; converting again can lose additional detail.

Can I convert ALAC or protected Apple Music files?

The supplied example uses AAC inside M4A. ALAC and other encodings may need an export from the original audio app. DRM-protected Apple Music files cannot be converted here.

Can I convert several files at once?

Add up to 10 files. They are processed one after another, and you can download each finished result or save the batch in one ZIP. Each file can be up to 100 MB, or 25 MB on touch devices. Use a computer for larger recordings.

Where is my download, and what happens to the original?

Choose Download beside a finished file. Look in your browser’s Downloads or the Files app on your phone; some browsers offer a sharing menu. The original is unchanged. Results are kept only in this tab, so download them before refreshing or leaving.
